Volvo gives up plan to sell only EVs by 2030

[ad_1] Car company Volvo has abandoned its target to produce only fully electric cars by 2030, saying it now expects to be selling some hybrid vehicles by that date. The carmaker blamed changing market conditions for its decision to give up a target it had announced only three years ago. It comes as the industry faces a slowdown in demand in some major markets for electric vehicles (EVs) and uncertainty due to the imposition of trade tariffs on EVs made in China. Volvo, which has traditionally flaunted its environmental credentials, joins other major carmakers General Motors and Ford in rowing back on EV ambitions. Volvo now expects at least 90% of its output to be made up of both electric cars and plug-in hybrids by 2030. The Swedish company may also sell a small number of so-called mild hybrids, which are more conventional vehicles with limited electrical assistance. “We are resolute in our belief that our future is electric,” said Jim Rowan, chief executive of Volvo. “However, it is clear that the transition to electrification will not be linear, and customers and markets are moving at different speeds.” The company also said the business climate for EVs had changed, due to factors such as a slow rollout of charging infrastructure and the withdrawal of consumer incentives. Independent equity analyst Anna McDonald said consumers still had concerns about switching to EVs. “Some of the subsidies that governments had put in place to encourage electric car purchases have ended and also there’s just that ongoing lack of demand because consumers are worried about charging,” she told the BBC’s Today programme. “It still remains the case that electric cars remain more expensive. “While the EU and the US are putting tariffs on Chinese cars that are imported to stop them kind of swamping the market, that just means that vehicles have to be made outside China which is more expensive in themselves. “Car manufacturers are not keen to start making a loss on these vehicles,” Ms McDonald added. Registrations of EVs across the European Union dropped by nearly 11% in July, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Volvo is majority-owned by Chinese car giant Geely and because it uses factories in China, it will also be affected by tariffs on imports of Chinese-made EVs in Europe and North America. Last week, Canada announced it was imposing a 100% tariff on imports of China-made electric vehicles, after similar announcements by the US and the EU. Western countries have accused China of subsidising its EV industry, giving its car makers an unfair advantage. China has rejected those allegations and criticised the tariffs as “discriminatory”. Ford has also been scaling back on its EV ambitions. Just last month, the US car giant announced it was scrapping plans for a large, three-row, all-electric sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and postponing the launch of its next electric pick-up truck. Its rival General Motors has also been cutting EV production goals in the last year. [ad_2] Source link

Revealed: ‘New frontrunner emerges to succeed Gary Lineker on Match of the Day’ after Jermaine Jenas was sacked by BBC over inappropriate workplace behaviour allegations

[ad_1] Jermaine Jenas seen by many as the clear favourite to replace Gary Lineker  However, a new front runner has emerged after former midfielder was sacked LISTEN NOW: It’s All Kicking Off!, available wherever you get your podcasts. New episodes every Monday and Thursday By Abdi Rashid Published: 14:59 EDT, 13 September 2024 | Updated: 18:27 EDT, 13 September 2024 A new favourite to replace Gary Lineker as Match of the Day host has emerged after Jermaine Jenas was sacked by the BBC last month. The former midfielder Jenas was seen by many bookmakers as the favourite to replace Lineker when he eventually steps down.  However, he has been sacked from Match of the Day and the One Show, effectively ending his hopes of succeeding Lineker. Lineker has presented Match of the Day since 1999, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the current season.  It’s understood the complaints regarding Jenas related to his ‘workplace conduct’ and that the issues were raised with the broadcaster a few weeks ago, and it took action. A new favourite to replace Gary Lineker (pictured) as Match of the Day host has emerged Jermaine Jenas was sacked by the BBC over inappropriate workplace behaviour allegations According to The Times, Mark Chapman is now the frontrunner to replace Lineker as the new presenter of the iconic programme.  Chapman has landed the role of lead presenter for BBC’s new Champions League highlights show, with the 50-year-old set to start his new role next week.  The BBC secured the rights in a three-year deal with UEFA that will return the Champions League to terrestrial channels.  The same outlet claims that is the reason why Chapman will be the favourite to become the new MOTD host from next season.  Chapman currently hosts Match of the Day 2 and has done since 2013 so becoming the face of the show on Saturdays would come as no surprise.  However, it would mean that he gives up his radio work on 5 Live Sport which will likely come as no issue given the huge opportunity ahead of him.  Mark Chapman is now reportedly the frontrunner to replace Lineker as the lead presenter  Chapman has worked on various other programmes including Final Score and The NFL Show since joining the BBC in 1996  Gabby Logan, who has often stood in for Lineker on Match of the Day, has also previously been touted as the latter’s replacement.  Share or comment on this article: Revealed: ‘New frontrunner emerges to succeed Gary Lineker on Match of the Day’ after Jermaine Jenas was sacked by BBC over inappropriate workplace behaviour allegations [ad_2] Source link

YouTube restricts teenager access to fitness videos

[ad_1] YouTube is to limit recommendations of certain health and fitness videos to teenagers, including those which “idealise” certain body types. It says 13 to 17-year-old users will still be able to search for and view fitness-related content – but will not be encouraged into repeated viewing of similar videos. YouTube says it is acting because of concerns that repeated exposure to such material can lead young people to develop “negative beliefs” about themselves. Experts have welcome the measure but say it needs to be accompanied by a “broader discussion” about fitness and health for young people. YouTube’s algorithm will usually recommend similar content for users to watch once they have finished a particular video, as well as displaying related videos on a sidebar. The platform says this will no longer be offered for teens when they view certain types of content, including: videos that compare physical features and idealises some types over others videos idealising specific fitness levels or body weights videos displaying social aggression in the form of non-contact fights and intimidation YouTube said the measures were being taken after its Youth and Familes Advisory Committee found that “teens are more likely than adults to form negative beliefs about themselves when seeing repeated messages about ideal standards in content they consume online.” However, the restrictions on what videos are offered will only be possible if the user is logged in to a YouTube account – and if they have registered an accurate date of birth. The platform does not automatically verify new users who join it. However new users must be at least 13 years old, and if YouTube suspects they provided an inaccurate age, they may be asked to verify it. New users who fail that verification will be asked to add a parent or guardian to supervise the account – and failing to do this will result in the account being disabled. Dr Petya Eckler, a senior lecturer at University of Strathclyde who studies the relationship between body image and social media, said she welcomed the announcement given “the link between use of social media by young people and perceptions of their bodies.” But she told the BBC more needed to be done. “This should go hand in hand with a broader discussion of fitness and health within families and the idea that exercise is a great way to enhance our overall health and wellbeing and should not be done only for appearance reasons.” YouTube has also announced new ways for parents to keep track of their children’s activities on the platform. Parents will be able link their accounts with teenagers in their household in order to see their uploads, subscriptions and comments, and receive emails when they upload videos or start livestreams. In May, Ofcom told tech firms to reformulate their algorithms to steer children away from what it called “toxic” material. [ad_2] Source link

Head to wptavern.com/contact/jukebox, and use the form there. So on the podcast today, we have Jonathan Bossenger. Jonathan based in Cape town, South Africa, has been an integral part of the WordPress community for nearly a decade. Transitioning from software development to web, and then WordPress development, he found his passion in education. Since attending his first word camp in 2015, he has focused on creating educational content for WordPress developers. Now employed at Automattic as a developer educator, he contributes to the Learn platform, helping to train and guide new developers in the WordPress ecosystem. He’s on the podcast today to explain some of the ways that you can learn WordPress with up to date, freely available content. We discuss the goal of making WordPress learning accessible globally, especially for those who can’t afford expensive courses. The discussion gets into the transformative potential of the Learn WordPress platform, especially in the era of Playground, which will enable interactive coding practice without the need for external tools. Jonathan sees this as a game changer for web agencies, providing a streamlined training resource for new developers and conserving valuable time and resources. We cover Jonathan’s journey from software developer to developer educator, supported by his former employer, Castos. He shares the challenges of keeping educational content current amidst WordPress’s rapid evolution, and the importance of staying updated with WordPress core developments. The conversation also touches on the structured learning pathways, designed to guide learners from beginner to advanced levels. Segmented into user designer and developer categories. The professionalism of WordPress projects like Learn, and the essential role of contributors in translating and internationalising content to reach a broader audience ,comes under the microscope as well. And Jonathan reflects upon the dynamic nature of open source communities, stressing the need for decisive leadership in software development decisions from time to time. Towards the end, we talk about the many ways that you can assist the Learn project, and there are many more ways than you might imagine. If you’re interested in finding out more, you can find all of the links in the show notes by heading to wptavern.com/podcast, where you’ll find all the other episodes as well. And so without further delay, I bring you Jonathan Bossenger. I am joined on the podcast today, once more by Jonathan Bossenger. Hey, Jonathan. [00:03:59] Jonathan Bossenger: Hello, I’m back. [00:04:01] Nathan Wrigley: Thank you so much for coming on the podcast today. We’re going to be talking about a really important subject, and a subject which I think is getting more importance. We can get into the politics or what have you of that in a moment. Before we begin the conversation all about Learn, and what’s going on over there, Jonathan, for those people who don’t know who you are, do you want to just give us your brief potted history? Maybe your current job, and your history with WordPress and so on? [00:04:24] Jonathan Bossenger: Sure. So for those who don’t know, my name is Jonathan Bossenger. I live in Cape Town in South Africa, which is the country right at the tip of Africa. I have been involved in the WordPress community now for about nine years. I went to my first WordCamp in Cape Town in 2015, and I am a web developer, originally a software developer, then a web developer, then a WordPress developer. And I’m now transitioned to this wonderful new thing that I call, or at least people call developer educator. I’m currently employed at Automattic, I’m sponsored to work full-time with the WordPress training team, and my job is basically creating educational content for WordPress developers. So everything that is on Learn, that has to do with WordPress development, I have got some hand in somewhere there. [00:05:05] Nathan Wrigley: Was this a pivot that you kind of had as part of your north star five or six years ago, or is this very much an evolution that kind of happened to you without it meaning to be the case? [00:05:16] Jonathan Bossenger: I did pivot from software development to developer education kind of organically, but also with a little bit of support. You’ll appreciate the story, Nathan. So as you will know, I was working at Castos for a number of years. I was the initial developer that Craig hired when we first kicked Castos off. I became lead developer as the company grew. And in conversations that I had with Craig, as my CEO, as the company grew, and as we run about the time the TinySeed thing happened and Craig had some money that he could spend to grow the team and all those things. He sat me down and he said to me, right, what does the future look like for you? As the company grows, we’ve got potential to get big, what does the future look like? And he said the word engineering manager, and the term CTO came up, and I realised in those conversations that that was not what I wanted to be doing. As much as I enjoyed developing software, I’m not great at leading people. I
