If you’re one of them, you might have heard that medication is the first line of defense. But medication isn’t the only way to bring down your numbers.  When it comes to managing high blood pressure, doctors are also firm believers in lifestyle changes, like eating a healthy diet and exercising. “It may take a few weeks for you to see the benefit, but there’s no doubt that lifestyle works,” says Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., M.P.H., FAAFP, Chief Medical Officer for Prevention for the American Heart Association. “These habits can complement the medicine you’re on, or even eliminate your need for them.” In fact, lifestyle changes are so powerful that research reveals they may significantly lower systolic blood pressure and drop the risk of cardiovascular disease by 30%. So we spoke with doctors to learn their top four tips to lower high blood pressure — plus some other worthy moves to consider. Here’s what they told us.  What is High Blood Pressure? High blood pressure (also called hypertension) develops when the blood flowing through your arteries pushes through at a higher-than-normal pressure—placing stress on your arterial walls. Over time, your arteries can become damaged, and that’s what ups your risk for heart attack and stroke.  Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury, or mmHg, for short. A healthy blood pressure is less than 120/80 mmHg. Your blood pressure is too high when you have a reading of 130/80 or higher. Anything in between is considered to be elevated, which may be a potential warning sign that your numbers are creeping up. You Just Found Out You Have High Blood Pressure—Here Are 4 Things Doctors Recommend Doing First 1. Consider your eating habits  There’s good evidence that a Mediterranean-style diet or DASH diet—both of which emphasize fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, whole grains and lean protein—can lower blood pressure by 8 to 12 mmHG, says Sanchez. In fact, research shows that the Mediterranean diet may reduce the odds of high blood pressure by 36%. How do these diets work? “It seems to be a package,” says Lawrence Appel, M.D., M.P.H., Director of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research at Johns Hopkins University. “It’s a combination of the foods you eat—an overall eating pattern—as opposed to single foods or individual nutrients in your diet.” 2. Watch your sodium  Sodium is one nutrient that—on its own—can hike up blood pressure. “It may do this by causing your body to retain fluid, which expands the amount of fluid in your blood and can increase blood pressure,” says Appel. Research reveals that eating a very low-sodium diet with just 500 milligrams of sodium per day for one week may lower systolic blood pressure by 8 mmHg compared to consuming a high-sodium diet. However, our experts say that any amount you can cut could help. Studies on the DASH diet, which limits sodium to 1,500 to 2,300 milligrams daily, have also shown significant reductions in blood pressure. Taking the salt shaker off the table can help, but it isn’t the most important thing to do, says Sanchez. “Highly processed foods and foods you get from restaurants is where a lot of that sodium comes from,” he says. “So think about cutting back there.” 3. Get regular physical activity  Exercise can increase blood flow and strengthen your heart—both things that can reduce blood pressure. Research has found that multiple types of activity—including regular cardio exercise, high-intensity interval training, isometric exercise, and resistance training— may all benefit blood pressure. Interestingly, isometric exercises—like planks and wall sits, where you hold the exercise versus moving through it—had an edge over some of the other types of exercise. Why? One theory: Squeezing your muscles to hold the exercise constricts the surrounding blood vessels and temporarily inhibits the flow of oxygen. Then, when you get out of the move, the release in pressure gives you a boost in blood flow. “But really, the point here is to do whatever type of activity you enjoy. It’s all good,” says Sanchez. “Fitting in the recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week can lower your systolic blood pressure by 4 to 9 mmHG.”  4. Aim for a healthier weight Even a little weight loss can be beneficial. “You don’t have to get to a completely healthy weight,” says Sanchez. “Just dropping some of that weight will result in a drop in systolic blood pressure anywhere from 5 to 20 mmHg.”  Research finds that losing around 5 pounds was associated with a 6-point drop in systolic blood pressure. So small wins can pay off in big ways. Other Tips for Managing High Blood Pressure Here’s a quick hit list of some other ways to reduce your blood pressure: Limit or avoid alcohol. Lots of sneaky habits can increase your blood pressure. Like a nightly glass or two of wine. If you drink at all, women should have no more than one per day; men should have no more than two. Quit smoking. Stopping smoking does more than help your blood pressure. “Quitting can save your life in so many other ways,” says Sanchez. According to the CDC, it can add 10 years to your life. Sleep well. Inadequate rest has been shown to up your odds of high blood pressure, says Sanchez. Exactly how isn’t clear, but he recommends aiming for seven to nine hours of good-quality sleep each night. Manage stress. Chronic stress in and of itself can raise your numbers. Additionally, stress can cause you to reach for less healthy foods, skip the gym, drink more, and make other choices that may drive your numbers up, says Sanchez. Try doing something every day that relaxes you, whether that’s a long walk with your dog, chatting with a friend, meditating, or any type of self-care that makes you feel good—lighter. [ad_1] My ex husband divorced me three years ago. When we got married we agreed that we weren’t going to have kids. I never wanted them, he said he didn’t really want them. So yeah. Four years into our marriage he changed his mind, and he chose to divorce me because I wouldn’t go back on our agreement and give him children. I’m not really a big believer in divorce. I was ready to be married for the rest of our lives. We had a good marriage, but I guess he didn’t love me that much if he picked kids that didn’t even exist over me. Right after our divorce he almost instantly remarried. He got his new wife pregnant right away, and they have two kids together. In the three years since then ive finished my higher education, and have accepted a high paying job in healthcare. Life has actually been pretty good for me, and I’ve gotten to the point where I think I’m ready to start looking to settle down. Yesterday morning my ex husband showed up on my doorstep crying. I figured something pretty awful must have happened so I let him in, and got him a drink. He started going on and crying about how awful his life is. He apparently hates his two kids, one of them is disabled and maybe autistic and he has no money due to the kid being so expensive. His wife yells at him all the time, she got fat after having kids and doesn’t want to lose the weight, she never puts out, he can never go anywhere anymore. He said that he wants a divorce from his new wife, and he regrets ever leaving me. He asked if I would take him back, and said he learned his lesson. I couldn’t help but laugh at him. It was so pitiful. His audacity also kind of astounded me. I told him that with two kids to support and his lack of loyalty he is not a catch, and I definitely won’t take him back, and maybe this was karma for divorcing me. Women in tech groups ‘can’t run on inspiration alone’

[ad_1] Suw Charman-Anderson Suw Charman-Anderson warns that the annual event she organises may have to end Groups supporting women in science, technology, engineering and maths (Stem) fields are struggling to survive as corporations’ shrinking budgets, and cultural changes, see diversity strategies take a back seat. Ada Lovelace Day – a global annual celebration of women working in Stem – is on borrowed time. Named after a 19th century female mathematician, the day came into being in 2009 when it was created by Suw Charman-Anderson. She had graduated with a science degree, but felt “fundamentally unwelcome” as one of just three women in her class. And she later grew tired of going to tech conferences and not seeing any women on stage. Ms Charman-Anderson says that the initiative is now running out of funds again, as almost happened two years ago. “We’ve basically limped on since then,” she says. “But I can’t keep making the financial sacrifice.” It’s not a high-budget operation. At its peak, Ms Charman-Anderson secured £55,000 in sponsorship for 12 months. She says that in other years it has been less than half of that despite high attendance figures at events. Ms Charman-Anderson adds that she is often told by the tech community that Ada Lovelace Day is inspirational, but it rarely translates into a much-needed injection of cash. “Organisations can’t run on inspiration alone,” she says. “Everyone in the Women in Stem sector is struggling for money. That’s always been the case, but it seems to have got a lot worse.” A quick search online reveals a number of women in stem social media accounts that have not posted any content in several months. And this year saw the sudden closure of the charity Women Who Code, a US-based group with 145,000 members. In June it announced that it was shutting down “due to factors that have materially impacted our funding sources”. Meanwhile, the US non-profit community Girls in Tech closed in July after 17 years. Founder Adriana Gascoigne told the news site Venturebeat that lack of funding was “the main reason” behind the decision. In addition, the UK initiative Tech Talent Charter, designed to encourage more diversity generally in the sector, shut in June, blaming tech companies for “quietly quitting” equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) commitments. This is something that’s currently generating a lot of debate. There are many examples of reductions in EDI teams and budgets inside corporations great and small, and just as many unofficial anecdotes. Women Who Code A number of support groups for women in the Stem sector have shut down this year For some it’s a result of belt-tightening, as even the biggest firms have been laying off thousands of workers, but for others it also signals a broader cultural shift away from prioritising diversity. High profile critics of EDI include Elon Musk, who bluntly posted in January that it was “just another word for racism”. Apple chief executive Tim Cook completely disagrees. “Technology’s a great thing that will accomplish many things, but unless you have diverse views at the table that are working on it, you don’t wind up with great solutions,” he told me when I met him in 2022. He said there were “no good excuses” for the lack of women in tech. When you look at the data, the tech giants still skew predominantly male. Apple’s most recent published diversity data is from 2022, and lists 35% of its global workforce as being women, and 32% of its leadership teams. In 2023, 34% of Google’s global workforce were women, and 32% of its leadership teams. At Microsoft, 29% of executive roles were occupied by women. In the UK, while more young women than previously are opting to study computing science at university, four out of five applicants for entry this year were still male, according to the UK university admissions service UCAS, with just under 3,000 women and just over 12,000 men. Perhaps the most poignant example I have heard lately about why the numbers game is still important came from MC Spano, a US tech firm boss who now mentors other women in the sector. She told me her own daughter requested to move down from her top set maths class at school because she was the only girl in it. “Having camaraderie in Stem classes is as important as having the academic achievement,” she says. MC Spano MC Spano says that female Stem students need other women for “camaraderie” Caitlin Gould runs TecWomenCIC, based in Cornwall. The team recently ran a coding club project for 60 school girls. At the end of it 95% of them said they had enjoyed learning about tech and engineering, and 91% said they understood why the subjects were important to their everyday lives. However, only the pilot was funded. Ms Gould says she spends up to 60% of her time trying to figure out where to get funding from, describing the organisation’s financing as “a patchwork quilt”. She told me that often funding comes in the form of a one-off payment, or is offered for a new idea, which makes it difficult to repeat successful campaigns. “It’s really challenging because there’s so much goodwill,” she says. “I get politicians and people in tech saying, ‘what you’re doing is amazing, how can we help?’, but when I say, ‘well, you can give me some money’ they ask if they can volunteer instead.” Caitlin Gould Caitlin Gould says she has to spend a majority of her time trying to secure funding For the last 15 years, Maggie Philbin, former presenter of the BBC’s science and tech show Tomorrow’s World, has been involved in a scheme called TeenTech, which runs Stem activities in schools. “Funding is always an issue,” she says. “We have some very loyal funders, but it can be very frustrating when you are working on a hand-to-mouth basis. “Some funders will fund something over a 12-month period. If you’re really, really lucky, three years, but it’s very tough.”

Automattic is Migrating Tumblr to WordPress  – WP Tavern

[ad_1] Automattic announced last week its plan to migrate Tumblr to WordPress, a move described as “one of the largest technical migrations in internet history.” This move comes after Automattic acquired Tumblr in 2019, marking the company’s biggest acquisition at the time. During the acquisition, Matt Mullenweg had pointed out that “Tumblr and WordPress have always been very philosophically aligned.” An emerging Tumblr/WordPress plugin and theme ecosystem were on the cards, and Matt said that once Tumblr’s backend is on WordPress, the idea of plugins can be explored. After the acquisition, Tumblr faced tough times, with Matt revealing last year that it was spending about $30 million more than its annual earnings. The porn ban didn’t help matters, but the Twitter Exodus of early 2023 following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the social media site gave it a sudden boost.  The migration announcement post said, “We’re not talking about changing Tumblr. We’re not turning Tumblr into WordPress. That would defeat the purpose. We acquired Tumblr to benefit from its differences and strengths, not to water it down. We love Tumblr’s streamlined posting experience and its current product direction. We’re not changing that. We’re talking about running Tumblr’s backend on WordPress. You won’t even notice a difference from the outside.” Automattic reiterated that “The changes will be exclusively at the backend.” The migration though not easy – with Tumblr hosting over half a billion blogs – will be a win-win situation for both WordPress and Tumblr. Automattic believes that “Tumblr will benefit from the collective effort that goes into the open source WordPress project. REVEALED: Cop who threw Tyreek Hill to the ground and cuffed him has been suspended ‘multiple times’ before for excessive force

Danny Torres was placed on administrative duties in the immediate aftermath of the incident amid calls for him to be fired, and now some shocking details have emerged about his past. According to police records obtained by TMZ, Torres has received a number of complaints since joining the Miami-Dade Police Department back in 1996. It has been claimed that he was accused of misconduct on six occasions, including force violations and improper procedures, while there have also been at least 13 investigations over him using excessive force. Torres has received multiple suspensions, including one ban in 2018 lasting 20 days, with multiple written reprimands also in his file. Dolphins star Tyreek Hill was dragged from his car and placed in handcuffs on Sunday Danny Torres (pictured) has been suspended ‘multiple times’ in the past, it has emerged There have also been some positive commendations – over two dozen – with one award for professionalism given to him in May 2023. The cop is currently being investigated for his role in the Hill traffic stop, which was caught by bodycam footage, which was released to the public.   The Miami Dolphins star has called for Torres to be fired and believes he was too rough with him during the incident on Sunday. ‘After a careful and thorough review of the multiple body cameras and concern citizens’ videos that captured the unfortunate events that transpired on Sunday, September 8, 2024, between several officers of the Miami Dade Police Department and Tyreek Hill, we are demanding for the immediate termination of the officer that has been placed on administrative leave,’ Hill said in a statement via attorney Julius B. Collins.  Shocking videos showed Hill being handcuffed and restrained on the floor after he was stopped for speeding, while one officer even appeared to strike him on the sidewalk. The wide receiver was pinned to the floor by officers ahead of the Dolphins’ season opener As he was violently apprehended by police, several of Hill’s teammates pulled over to try to deescalate the situation, only for defensive tackle Calais Campbell to briefly be placed in handcuffs himself. In the astonishing footage, which emerged earlier this week, cops could be heard telling Hill to ‘stop crying’ while the NFL star said: ‘ Take me to jail… do what you have to do.’ On Tuesday, the police citations claimed Hill was stopped because he was believed to be driving 60mph in a 40mph zone – without wearing a seatbelt. He was fined a combined total of $308. ‘On at least two occasions, the escalating officer placed his hands on or around Mr. Hill’s neck during the traffic stop.
