Seniors are the backbone of our society, shouldering countless responsibilities while passing down invaluable wisdom and rich traditions to the younger generation. To honour their vital role, we celebrate the International Day of Older Persons on October 1 each year — a day dedicated to recognising the contributions of older citizens. This special occasion not only highlights their significance as societal leaders but also sheds light on the challenges they face, reminding us all to appreciate and support the incredible legacy they create.

The theme for the 34th International Day of Older Persons is “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.”

On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons through Resolution 45/106. This resolution acknowledged the importance of addressing the concerns and needs of elderly people and promoting their well-being. This initiative was led by the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing, adopted by the World Assembly on Ageing in 1982 and later sanctioned by the UN General Assembly.
The first International Day of Older Persons was observed on October 1, 1991. This date was chosen to coincide with the United Nations Principles for Older Persons, which were adopted by the General Assembly to address the rights and well-being of older individuals.

In societies with ageing populations, it becomes imperative to promote the well-being and dignity of elderly individuals and to acknowledge the significant contributions, wisdom, and needs of our senior citizens. The day also aims to raise awareness about the challenges older persons face worldwide.
This day remains an important celebration for promoting awareness of ageing-related issues and fostering a sense of respect and inclusion for older individuals in societies around the globe. Each year, this day provides an opportunity to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that accompany an ageing population.
