There seems to be quite a large percentage of people on Reddit that view the tipping custom as antiquated and toxic. They feel that it’s not their responsibility to subsidize employee wages, and that the employer should be paying a livable wage to its workers to begin with. You are certainly entitled to this opinion, and are not obligated to tip. But as someone who works in the service industry and relies on tips, let me put it simply. If you don’t want to tip, don’t put yourself in a position where a tip is expected. Don’t want to tip your stylist? Buy some clippers and cut your own damn hair. Don’t want to tip your food delivery guy? Get in the car and go get your own damn food. Don’t want to tip your server? That’s what to go is for.
We’re doing you a service that you choose not to do for yourself at that particular time. So by stiffing us you’re not ‘changing the system’ you’re just taking food out of our mouth and ensuring you get shittier service next time.
Ok, rant over.
Edit: This is getting a lot of traction so let me add a few addendums:
1: I’m excluding ‘tipping jars’ or other such things from this. I personally do not tip for takeout and don’t expect others to. If you’re literally just handing me a bag, the idea of a tip is laughable.
2: Tipping should be equal to the level of service received. Great service = great tip, poor service = poor tip. But service should never equal no tip.
