VICTORIA COUNTY, Texas – The Victoria County Fire Marshal’s Office is taking steps to improve fire safety and prevention.

Victoria County Fire Marshal Dan Porter says that due to increasing construction across the county, fire inspections conducted by his office are taking up more time. With only a three-person staff, Porter says critical fire calls could be missed.

Beginning Jan. 1, the Fire Marshal’s Office will begin charging a fee for fire inspections for businesses. Porter says the money collected will go into a separate fund to help the office grow, improve facilities and increase staff.

Porter says the goal is to strengthen fire prevention measures.

“You can safely get out, you know how to get out, that there are enough exits, that there is lighting to see your way out, and that the building doesn’t just catch fire and burn like a matchstick,” Porter said. “There are certain fire barriers and fire ratings that some buildings have to meet. That’s our job — to go in and make sure all of that is in place so you can enter without any worries.”

The City of Victoria Fire Department already has an inspection fee system in place. Porter says his office will adopt that fee schedule.
