Diabetes is one of the most prevalent health challenges in the United States, affecting millions of Americans every day. According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 38 million people across the country are living with diabetes. For many, managing diabetes is an ongoing journey, while for others, understanding how to prevent it is a priority. As November marks American Diabetes Month, Carson Tahoe Health is working to raise awareness and offer the community valuable resources to combat this epidemic.
On Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to noon, Carson Tahoe Health will host a Diabetes Health Fair at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center in the front lobby.
This free event is designed to educate, empower, and provide attendees with the tools they need to either manage their diabetes or take preventive steps to avoid developing the disease. Whether you are newly diagnosed, at risk, or simply want to learn more, this event is for you.
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities and educational sessions that are informative and enjoyable. We’ve structured the event to offer valuable insights through expert talks, hands-on learning, and interactive stations, all geared toward raising awareness about diabetes and how to manage it effectively.
Some highlights of the event include:
• Expert Lectures: Participants can attend a presentation series led by local endocrinologists between the hours of 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the 1st floor Bristlecone room. These specialists will share the latest advancements in diabetes care and will discuss the role of medications and lifestyle in managing or preventing diabetes.
• Interactive Stations: Several booths will be set up to showcase the newest technologies and approaches to diabetes care, including blood glucose monitoring devices, insulin pumps, and glucose rescue therapies. Additionally, heart health, mental wellness, physical activity, and nutrition experts will provide valuable guidance on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
• Fun Activities and Giveaways: In addition to the educational offerings, we want attendees to enjoy the event. There will be games and giveaways throughout the morning, ensuring that the Diabetes Health Fair is not only insightful but also engaging for all ages. You could even win one of three raffle prizes, including gift bags from Carson Tahoe Health.
To understand the significance of this event, it’s essential to grasp the gravity of diabetes as a public health issue. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, occurs when the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or becomes resistant to it, causing elevated blood sugar levels. This can lead to serious long-term complications that affect the heart and blood vessels, eyes, kidneys, nerves, and feet. Many of these complications can be prevented or delayed by being proactive with lifestyle and medical interventions. Small but significant changes, like eating a healthy diet, committing to regular physical activity, and complying with prescribed medical interventions can make a world of difference. The Diabetes Health Fair is an ideal venue to explore these strategies in more detail and learn how to incorporate them into your daily routine.
Carson Tahoe Health is deeply committed to the well-being of the community, and our efforts extend far beyond the Diabetes Health Fair. To provide continued support, we offer monthly diabetes support groups where participants can share their experiences, ask questions, and receive encouragement from both peers and healthcare providers. These meetings take place on the second Wednesday of each month at the Carson Senior Center from 1-2 p.m., and on the third Wednesday of the month at the Dayton Medical Center during the same time.
In addition, Carson Tahoe Health offers a year-long Diabetes Prevention Program that has been shown to reduce the risk of developing diabetes by more than 50%. You may be eligible to join if you are 18 years or older and have a prediabetes diagnosis. For more information, please visit our website: https://www.carsontahoe.com/nutrition.html.
We encourage everyone to take advantage of these wonderful opportunities. Whether you’re seeking guidance for managing diabetes or want to learn more about prevention. Knowledge is power, and by taking steps to educate ourselves and our loved ones, we can reduce the risk of diabetes and improve overall health in our community. Mark your calendar for Saturday, Nov. 8, and let us help you take the next step toward a healthier you. We look forward to seeing you there!
