Fire destroys Fredericton auto parts business

Fire destroyed the Capital City Auto Parts building on Fredericton’s Alison Boulevard on Friday night.

The Fredericton fire department responded to the call just before 10 p.m. Firefighters from Oromocto and Upper Kingsclear were also called to assist, says Fredericton’s Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Craig Harnum.

About 40 per cent of the building had visible flames when firefighters arrived, Harnum said.

He said the structure later collapsed.

The fire continued to burn until Saturday morning. The scene was cleared in the afternoon.

Harnum said the nearest fire hydrant was more than a kilometre away. He said the department had to have eight engine tankers transport water between the hydrant and the site.

He said roughly 32 firefighters were on scene.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.

Harnum said the fire department is sorry about the loss of a local family business.

“We just want them to know that we did everything we could,” he said.

CBC News reached out to the business but did not hear back.
