World and European Weightlifting Champion Nazik Avdalyan, the first Armenian woman to win a world title, has announced the establishment of the Nazik Avdalyan Foundation for Sports Development.
The foundation aims to promote a healthy lifestyle in Armenia, develop sports infrastructure, and engage people of all backgrounds in comprehensive physical and psychological growth.
Avdalyan, whose victories on international stages have inspired thousands of Armenians, emphasized the transformative power of sports. “Sport shapes not only the strength of the body but also of the soul. We believe that every child, youth, or athlete should have an equal opportunity to develop, grow stronger, and win—regardless of their circumstances or place of residence,” she said.
The foundation’s core mission is to expand awareness about healthy living and make sports more accessible across Armenia. It plans to build modern gyms and rehabilitation centers, engage youth from socially vulnerable groups, border and rural communities, and initiate informal educational programs, tournaments, and international exchange projects. The foundation also intends to promote the development of sports psychology in Armenia.
“Our mission is to help build a physically and mentally healthy society, where sport is seen not only as a path to victory but as a force that enhances the quality of life and fosters social solidarity,” Avdalyan noted.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the foundation’s work focuses on promoting social inclusion, community resilience, and equal opportunities. Its beneficiaries will include a wide range of groups—from minors and amateur athletes to professional coaches, sports physicians, and members of vulnerable communities.
“Sport is an essential part of our national identity and a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle,” Avdalyan stressed. “However, the lack of infrastructure in the regions, limited access to psychological support, and the declining physical activity among youth show that it’s time for a new and systematic approach. We aim to fill these gaps and build a strong foundation for future victories.”
The foundation’s first major project will be implemented in Panik village, part of the enlarged Artik community in Shirak province, where a modern sports school will be constructed. The facility will meet international standards and serve as both a sports complex and a community development center. It is designed to boost sports participation, promote healthy lifestyles, and encourage social inclusion across Shirak and neighboring regions.
“Children growing up in rural areas are often physically strong, resilient, and determined,” Avdalyan added. “But their potential often goes unnoticed and underutilized. We cannot allow this talent to be lost. Sport can be the platform where these children discover themselves, develop leadership skills, and learn to fight and win—not only in the gym but also in life.”
