Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that he will travel to Washington on Oct. 7 to meet with US President Donald Trump and discuss customs tariffs. According to a statement from the Canadian government, the visit is described as a “working trip” focused on “shared priorities in a new economic and security relationship” between the two countries.
This will be Carney’s second trip to the White House since his election in April. Trade tensions triggered by the Trump administration have strained bilateral relations and weighed heavily on Canada’s economy. The country, whose largest trading partner is the United States, saw its GDP contract by about 1.5% in the 2Q25, with exports plunging 27%. Trump imposed tariffs on certain Canadian goods not covered by the USMCA, the trade pact binding the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The agreement, in effect since 2020, is set to undergo a joint review in the coming months. Trump has signaled his intent to renegotiate its terms to secure more favorable conditions for US manufacturers.
