It’s resolution season, which means many are hitting the gym for the first time or finally committing to that workout plan or diet that’s been on the back burner. But what cities offer the most opportunities to act on these goals in a new year brimming with health potential?
A new study from WalletHub named Atlanta one of the top 10 U.S cities for a healthy lifestyle. Using data from Google, the U.S. Census Bureau and other sources, the finance company ranked cities based on walkability, access to intramural sports leagues and more.
Atlanta took the No. 7 spot, excelling in aquatic athletics. The city had the best access to swimming pools and lessons nationwide and received a No. 1 ranking for lake and ocean proximity.
Atlanta also placed No. 6 for access to intramural sports leagues for those looking to stay fit in community with others. Plus, with some of the lowest fitness club fees and tennis court rental costs, Atlantans don’t have to worry about affordability when exercising.
Cyclists have reason to celebrate too, as Atlanta also leads the nation in bike-sharing programs.
“Atlanta is one of the best cities for staying active, ranking seventh overall,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “The top cities for staying active offer opportunities for all types of people, from those who prefer team sports to people who simply want to get their daily exercise by walking or biking to work. They also tend to be large cities that still have a close proximity to beautiful natural areas for hiking and swimming. Finally, the top cities for an active lifestyle have populations that are highly interested in exercise, which helps people find workout partners and stay motivated.”
