Peter Wright crashes OUT of World Darts Championship as two-time champion suffers shock second-round defeat at Ally Pally

Two-time winner Peter Wright crashed out of the PDC World Darts Championships after being thrashed by qualifier Arno Merk in the second round.

Wright, the 2020 and 2022 champion, looked out of sorts throughout at Alexandra Palace as he was beaten 3-0 by his 33-year-old opponent.

‘Snakebite’ had made the quarter-finals of the World Championships last year, but is currently down in 30th in the rankings.

Wright averaged just 79.20 throughout the contest compared to Merk’s 92.17, leading to the Scotsman suffering an early exit.

Merk admitted he was shocked to have beaten a ‘legend’ of the sport.

‘I am stunned. I can’t believe it, I have just beat a legend,’ Merk told Sky Sports.
