On a wet Wednesday afternoon, children from Grade-Ruan C of E Primary School were welcomed to the Wavecrest Café at the Lizard for a hands-on lesson in healthy living.
This special trip allowed the pupils to see their science curriculum come to life within a professional kitchen environment.
Before the chopping boards came out, Wavecrest team members Jasmine, Victoria, and Poppy spoke to the children about different food groups and the specific roles each plays in keeping the human body healthy.

To put this knowledge into practice, the group worked together to prepare a fresh vegetable soup. Under the guidance of the team, the pupils helped wash and chop a variety of fresh, locally sourced vegetables.

This provided a perfect opportunity to discuss the environmental benefits of shopping locally and how it helps to reduce a person’s carbon footprint.
The visit wasn’t strictly business; however, the festive season brought a special reward for the hard-working students. After the vegetable soup proved to be a hit, the children were treated to a ‘naughty’ hot chocolate topped with marshmallows and whipped cream.

To keep the momentum going, the Wavecrest team has made healthy eating colouring sheets and word searches available at the café for any families who visit.
The team praised the children for being “well-behaved and polite.” In a post shared on Facebook, the Wavecrest team said: “Wow, what a fantastic morning with the children.
“All so well-behaved and polite. They all helped wash and chop fresh, locally sourced vegetables to make their own healthy soup.”

Grade-Ruan school added: “Socoa Class have had an amazing morning, Wavecrest Lizard Point. Linked to our science learning, we looked at the food groups and how they help us keep healthy before making our own soup using local ingredients.

The initiative was met with warm praise from the local community. One resident commented: “What a lovely thing to do with the children – it’s amazing to see Wavecrest giving back to the community and teaching them about healthy eating.
