INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each and every Saturday, WISH-TV highlights a local company together with our partners at Indiana Grown.
This week, David Mullins, and his daughter, Gabi, with Bee Great join the show!
The Mullins family, based in Churubusco near Fort Wayne, Indiana, started beekeeping as a hobby in 2018. David Mullins, and his father, Roger, owned two apiaries, borrowed an extractor, and “shared a love for bees and real honey.”
Outside of beekeeping, David worked as a tenured professor – until his teaching position was suddenly eliminated during downsizing. Instead of finding another teaching job, David pursued beekeeping full-time.
According to Bee Great’s website, their mission is clear: Care for bees and environment, share the story behind their honey products, promote raw honey’s health benefits, and make high-quality honey accessible and affordable.
In sharing their story with News 8, David proudly speaks of Gabi’s contributions to the business, crediting her with coming up with the name “Bee Great.”
“We were looking for something that had some kind of action to it in the name of our business, and she was little, so she came up with the idea of ‘something with bees.’ Then she said, ‘It would be great,’ and then I went, ‘Oh, Bee Great!’” David said. “She did a great job with that and then she also helped develop our wasabi honey.”
Despite coming up with the product, Gabi says her favorite honey is the cacao flavor, which only has two ingredients: raw cacao and honey.
