Nutrition and Academic Success!

For college students, proper nutrition is the key to success in and out of the classroom. Eating well can improve focus, energy levels, and overall well-being, helping students stay on top of their academic and personal goals.

Concentration and memory are important for academic performance. Foods like fruits, nuts, fish, whole grains, and vegetables support brain function with essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Including these in a well-balanced diet can help sharpen mental focus and boost learning.

Long hours of studying, attending class and extra-curricular activities can quickly expend a student’s energy. Fortunately, college students can replenish and maintain those high energy levels by eating foods with complex carbohydrates like quinoa and blueberries along with lean protein and healthy fats found in chicken and eggs. These foods are essential for sustained energy release and can help maintain steady energy levels and prevent crashes from simple carbohydrates and sugars.

A well-balanced diet can also help students manage stress and stay focused on their academic demands. Nutrient-dense foods can help regulate stress hormones and promote a balanced mood. For example, foods rich in vitamin B6 and magnesium, such as bananas and leafy greens, are known to aid in stress reduction and emotional stability. A healthy diet can be a valuable tool in managing the emotional ups and downs of college life.

Sabeena Zubair, the registered dietitian at Florida Atlantic Student Health Services, invites students to make an appointment and learn more about the role nutrition can have in their life both as a college student and throughout adulthood. “I see students every day to address specific nutrition concerns or simply get them on the right track to achieve a healthy lifestyle through maintaining a well-balanced diet.”
