Fresh from collecting two gold medals at the recent European Masters Championships in Madeira, Sligo Athletic Club’s John MacDermott believes he is lucky to be able to keep competing and to be fully healthy at the age of 81.

MacDermott, originally from Boyle but living in Strandhill, conquered the M80 decathlon and the M80 800m, collecting double gold in what was an incredible championships for Team Ireland – winning 32 gold medals, 28 silver, and 20 bronze medals.
