The city of Bellingham hasn’t yet sold a surplus school district building at 1306 Dupont St., and the intended buyer may yet reconsider a plan to convert it to housing. That creaky 117-year-old brick structure, with subsequent additions, is the kind of investment that would give pause to any traditional developer’s ambition. Too easily, such masonry dreams can turn into a money pit. (The building also experienced burst pipes and flooding during the winter of 2023-24.)
