With site plans approved by the Planning Commission at its Oct. 2 meeting, the path was cleared for national chain Andy’s Frozen Custard to open its first location in Derby.
Per the staff report, the Andy’s location will be developed just south of The Sandbox off of Rock Road. Like other Andy’s locations, the Derby site will be a drive-thru facility with outdoor seating (none inside the building) and patio. Like a growing number of food service businesses, staff reported it will also have the capability to take orders by table if the drive-thru line long.
Assistant City Planner Everett Haynes noted the site plan met the majority of requirements. There was an issue tied to differing dimensions of Southern Star pipeline easements, but Haynes should those would require some minor changes to landscaping and signage.
In terms of design, did point out that the Derby site would have a rather unique look.
“This is not exactly like the others in the metropolitan area,” Haynes said. “This is, I think, the first of its kind. Maybe it’s a different generation of building.”
Currently, there are three Andy’s Frozen Custard locations in the Wichita metropolitan area. The chain was established in Osage Beach, Mo., in 1986 and currently has more than 170 locations across 15 states.
